Small World Play

What is Small World Play exactly?

Like it's name, it involves setting up a miniature world to invite a child to engage in imaginary play. It involves miniature figurines, such as dolls, animals, nature items, cars and any other items which set the scene for whatever theme is being explored. Popular themes include pirates, dinosaurs, farms, fairies, out at sea, in the wild and more. Often educators and parents will include sensory elements to small world set up’s, such as coloured rice, play dough, kinetic sand, water or home made concoctions! Small world play should follow the child’s interests and give them prompts to explore these interests in a fun way.
